iTeach, iLearn: iPod Touch in the Classroom

SESSION: 88
Nneka Robinson, Woodward Academy IT Department
Spanish 3-4 Thursday 9:30 - 10:30 Capacity: 88
In this session, participants will get a hands-on glimpse of some of the powerful ways an iTouch can support classroom learning. Do you want your students to be able to quickly research any topic from their desks? Do you want to provide resources on inventors, states, rainforest animals, art movements, or literary genres? Would your student benefit from a Rhyming Dictionary? Encyclopedia? Thesaurus? Do you want to provide differentiated practice on math, spelling, or grammar skills? Would you like to record students reading or speaking, to create customized quizzes and flashcards for any subject, or to provide video and audio that students can view or listen to at their own pace? Would your students find a calculator, metric converter, compass helpful? There's an app for that!
STRAND: Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment AUDIENCE: Instructional PK-5 TYPE: Concurrent

Reasons for use;
  • Differentiation
  • Thousands of Educational Aps - free and paid
  • Increased Engagement

- Sets for each section of the school that are used upon sign-up by the teacher.
- Send one home with each of the teachers so they can get familiar with all the apps that have been loaded before using them with their class.
- Great for reinforcement of skills
- Synching devices available so you can do MANY at one time! instead of adding the app for each one
- YouTube videos available to show the students how to use the app
- Use a document camera for the teacher to show the actual device when working with the students
- Mobile Enabled
- Cart from Bretford - others out there that are cheeper, but they do not work as well. Will charge as well.
- Volume purchasing program available for apps - up to the developer if they participate in the program or not. Apple has no control over this.
- Suggest using a specific address for the iTunes account instead of a personal account.
- AppShopper - a good site to use to search for apps
- Appsfire - another site to search, but also allows you to share with others
- Learning in Hand - Tony Vincent's website for reference when implementing
